What is a Cooperative?

Being a member of a cooperative is a unique experience because we are owned by our members and operate for their benefit, rather than to generate profits for investors. This sets us apart from other businesses and is what we refer to as the co-op difference!

Member Controlled

When you belong to a cooperative, you decide who’s in charge. You choose the board members and directors, so you have a direct impact on what happens. So vote for people who share the same beliefs as you!

Service Oriented

Typical businesses chase after profits like a horse wearing blinders. Since cooperatives aren’t your typical business, they focus their energy on other things, like member service. We pride ourselves on giving our members more personalized attention.

Our History

The co-op’s sole purpose is to serve our members.

We exist because no other electric utility was willing to provide electric service to the “last-mile” areas of the rural areas we currently serve.

In the late 1930s, as part of FDR’s New Deal, the Rural Electrification Act (REA) provided much-needed support to residents of rural America so they could form their own electric companies. And that’s precisely what a group of local folks did under the guidance of the Edgar County Farm Bureau.

Our goal today has stayed the same. We’re proud to serve our local communities.

It always has been. It always will be.
