The electric utility industry is undergoing a significant transformation, which puts added pressure on electric cooperative directors. Their choices can have long-term impacts on the cooperative. As a result, having a deeper understanding of the industry, governance, and cooperative principles is crucial. This knowledge benefits not only the directors but also the electric cooperative members.
EnerStar Electric Cooperative is pleased to announce that director Granville Colvin recently earned the Credentialed Cooperative Director certificate (CCD) from the National Rural Electric Cooperative Association (NRECA) by completing advanced courses on the board’s role in governing the co-op. He joins fellow CCD-certified board members Danny Gard of West Union, Jeff Zimmerman of Oakland, Jeff Murphy of Marshall, and Kevin Julian of Metcalf.
In addition, Julian recently completed the next level of training to earn his Board Leadership Certificate (BLC). The program consists of a series of courses focusing in greater depth on specific industry and governance issues, including risk management, power supply, parliamentary procedure, technology, and policy development.
“Educational development is a crucial cooperative principle and a cornerstone of effective self-governance. A director with a better understanding of the complexities of the constantly evolving electric utility industry can best serve our co-op membership,” said Dave Clinton, CEO of EnerStar. “We are grateful for the additional effort and time put in by these directors for the betterment of our cooperative.”
The NRECA is the national service organization representing the nation’s more than 900 member-owned electric cooperatives. It serves 42 million people in 47 states, and we are proud to be a part of this extensive network.
